Political Issues Facing Local 27
2/1/2007

The new year has begun with many changes. Labor Unions poured more money than ever into last year’s election and finally got what we wanted; Democratic control of Congress. The first 100 hours of Congress will be very important to the working class of America.
With a 23 seat majority in the House, Democrats set a legislative agenda that includes measures to increase the minimum wage, lobbying and ethics reform and instituting new national security programs, expanding stem cell research, permitting the Federal Government to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices for Medicare patients and cutting interest rates on college loans and ending tax subsidies for big oil companies.
This is an agenda that speaks directly to the day to day problems facing working America. For the first time in 12 years, we are confronting issues that the Bush Administration has held near and dear to the corporations and America’s wealthiest citizens.
One very important issue being pushed forward by organized labor is the Employee Free Choice Act. This piece of legislation, which was looked down upon by the Republican controlled Congress calls for card check union recognition and protections for workers trying to organize non-union employers.
Senator Ted Kennedy and Representative George Miller will both be chairing the committees examining this measure, and both are dedicated to moving it forward. This is a direct result of the new majorities in Congress and the overwhelming voter turnout among union voters in the last election.
